Vijay Mahajan founded PRADAN, a highly regarded NGO which has worked with over a million poor households since 1982. Vijay moved from PRADAN in 1991 to set up the Basix Social Enterprise Group which has supported over five million lower income households through microfinance and livelihood promotion services since 1996.
Globally, Vijay has been first a Board Member and then Chair of the World Bank’s Consultative Group to Assist the Poor (CGAP) and the Co-Chair of the World Economic Forum, Davos, Working Group on Social Entrepreneurship, as one of the 60 “Outstanding Social Entrepreneurs of the World”. In the field of policy analysis, Vijay was member of several working groups of the Planning Commission, the Rangarajan Committee on Financial Inclusion, the Raghuram Rajan Committee on Financial Sector Reforms and part-time member of the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India. Vijay has served on the Boards of a number of major Indian NGOs - ASSEFA, DSC, Gram Vikas, PRIA, and educational and training institutions – IRMA, IIFM, IIHMR, MANAGE and NIMSME. He has served on the investment committees of Aavishkaar India Micro Venture Fund Ltd and the Menterra Social Investment Fund Ltd. Vijay is a Distinguished Alumnus of IIT, Delhi (1975), IIM Ahmedabad (1981) and was a Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, Princeton University (1989). After leading Basix for 20 years, Vijay took over as the CEO of the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation and the Director of the Rajiv Gandhi Institute for Contemporary Studies in Jun 2018.
